Washington Fishing License Information for Travelers and Anglers

Navigating the rules for a world-class fishing destination like the Columbia River, Snake River, or the Pacific Ocean can seem daunting, but securing the right permits is a straightforward process that ensures our local fisheries remain vibrant for generations. At JB's Killer Guide Service, we want your focus to be on the thrill of the catch, so we’ve compiled this essential guide to help you get "street legal" before your adventure begins.

Who Needs a License?

In Washington State, everyone aged 15 and older is required to have a valid recreational fishing license.

  • Youth Exemption: Children 14 and younger do not need a license to fish, though they are still required to follow all catch limits and rules.
  • Catch Record Cards (CRC): Even if a youth is fishing for free, they may still need a Catch Record Card for specific species like Salmon, Steelhead, or Sturgeon to track the harvest accurately.

Resident vs. Non-Resident 2026 Pricing

Fees for Washington fishing licenses were updated for the 2025-2027 biennium. Below are the approximate costs for the most common licenses used on our trips:

License Type              Resident Fee Non-Resident Fee

One-Day All-Water License $11.00         $16.00

Annual Saltwater Package $35.00        $63.00

Annual All-Water Package $40.00         $68.00

Important Note for 2026: Starting January 1, 2026, all anglers (15+) targeting Salmon or Steelhead in the Columbia River or its Washington tributaries must purchase the Columbia River Salmon and Steelhead Endorsement (CRSSE). This endorsement costs $8.75 for most adults and $7.10 for 15-year-olds and seniors.

Freshwater vs. Saltwater Rules

The region served by JB's Killer Guide Service covers both freshwater and marine environments.

  • Freshwater License: Required for all trips on the Snake River and the majority of the Columbia River.
  • Saltwater License: Required if we are heading out to the Pacific Ocean or fishing specifically from the North Jetty.
  • Combination License: This is often the best "trust-based" choice for travelers, as it covers you across all water types we might visit during your stay.

Special Exemptions and Discounts

Washington offers reduced-rate licenses for several groups to encourage time on the water:

  • Seniors: Residents aged 70+ enjoy significant discounts, with annual freshwater licenses often as low as $7.50.
  • Disabled Veterans: Reduced-fee "Fish Washington" packages are available for resident and non-resident veterans with a 30% or higher service-related disability.
  • Free Fishing Weekend: Every year, the first weekend after the first Monday in June is "Free Fishing Weekend," where licenses are not required for anyone (though Catch Record Cards are still needed for some species).

Where to Buy Your License

You can purchase your license 24/7 through the WDFW Licensing System online, or via the MyWDFW mobile app. If you prefer to buy in person, many local sporting goods stores and bait shops act as authorized dealers.
